SZEnergy Team

A team of students from Széchenyi István University, five-time consecutive winners of the Shell Eco-marathon, who are developing an electric-powered, autonomous racing car.

Meet our team!

The SZEnergy Team at Széchenyi István University is a student competition team operating under the guidance of lecturers and researchers. Our main area of activity is the design and development of energy-efficient autonomous electric vehicles.

Our latest racing car, the SZEmission, has set a new world record every year for the past five years at the world’s largest energy-efficiency competition, the Shell Eco-marathon.

Teams from the world’s leading technical universities are also taking part in the competition’s international field, so our results are considered outstanding even on a global scale.

Which racing cars represented our team?

Our team continues to develop its competition vehicles year on year. At present, SZEmission is the focus of our development work.

SZEmission

SZEmission was completed in 2019, and we have been continuously developing it ever since. In 2022, the vehicle set a world record of 284 km/kWh, which we improved to 291 in 2023, 309 in 2024, 327 in 2025 and then 332 km/kWh in 2026. Its self-supporting carbon-composite body weighs just 95 kg when ready to drive.

SZElectricity

Between 2013 and 2018, SZElectricity represented our team at the Shell Eco-marathon competitions. The vehicle achieved several podium finishes, with a best result of 3rd place. Its peak energy efficiency was 195 km/kWh, and its development provided an important foundation for the technical direction of subsequent designs and the team’s further development.

SZEvolution

SZEvolution represented our team at the Shell Eco-marathon competitions between 2010 and 2012. The solar-powered Urban Concept vehicle came first in 2010 and second in 2012. A major milestone was that it was the first to complete a race with a positive energy balance, meaning it finished the race with more energy than it started with.

SZEnergy Car

The SZEnergy Car was our team’s first racing car; it was completed in 2008 and competed until 2010. In 2009, the solar-powered vehicle took first place at the Shell Eco-marathon in Lausitz, achieving the best energy balance in the field. The development of this 152 kg car laid the foundations for our team’s subsequent racing vehicles.
